Johannes 11:54 Jesus wandelte daher nicht mehr offen unter den Juden, sondern zog von dort in das Land nahe der Wüste in eine Stadt namens Ephraim. Er blieb dort bei seinen Schülern.
(1) Eine Position, die anscheinend von einiger Bedeutung ist, da die Position von Baal-Hazor (wahrscheinlich = Tell `Asur), an der sich Abrahams Schaffarm befand, durch ihre Beziehung bestimmt wird (2. Samuel 13:23). Dass es nördlich von Jerusalem lag, scheint in 2. Samuel 13:34 angedeutet zu sein. Es kann mit dem Ephraim von Eusebius, Onomasticon, 20 römische Meilen nördlich von Jerusalem identisch sein und daher irgendwo in der Nähe von Sinjil und el-Lubban gesucht werden. Damit verbunden könnte der Name Aphaerema gewesen sein, ein Bezirk in Samaria, der in 1 Makkabäer 11:34 erwähnt wurde; Ant, XIII, iv, 9.
(2) Die Stadt in der Nähe der Wüste, in die sich Jesus nach der Auferweckung des Lazarus zurückzog (Johannes 11:54). Dies entspricht wahrscheinlich Ephrem von Eusebius, Onomasticon (s.v. "Afra") 5 römische Meilen östlich von Bethel. Dies kann der Ort sein, den Josephus zusammen mit Bethel benannt hat (BJ, IV, ix, 9). Es antwortet wahrscheinlich auf eT-Taiyebeh, ein großes Dorf etwa 4 Meilen nördlich von Beitin. Die Antike des Ortes wird durch die Zisternen und Felsengräber belegt. Es steht auf einem hohen Hügel mit weitem Ausblick, einschließlich der Ebenen von Jericho und des Toten Meeres.

John 11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
(1) A position apparently of some importance, since the position of Baal-hazor (probably = Tell `Asur) where Abraham`s sheep-farm was located, is determined by relation to it (2 Samuel 13:23). That it lay North of Jerusalem seems to be indicated in 2 Samuel 13:34. It may be identical with the Ephraim of Eusebius, Onomasticon, 20 Roman miles North of Jerusalem, and therefore to be sought somewhere in the neighborhood of Sinjil and el-Lubban. Connected with this may have been the name Aphaerema, a district in Samaria mentioned in 1 Maccabees 11:34; Ant, XIII, iv, 9.
(2) The town near the wilderness to which Jesus retired after the raising of Lazarus (John 11:54). This probably corresponds to Ephrem of Eusebius, Onomasticon (s.v. "Afra") 5 Roman miles East of Bethel. This may be the place named along with Bethel by Josephus (BJ, IV, ix, 9). It probably answers to eT-Taiyebeh, a large village about 4 miles North of Beitin. The antiquity of the site is attested by the cisterns and rock tombs. It stands on a high hill with a wide outlook including the plains of Jericho and the Dead Sea.
